With limited 100% plant-based meal kits on the market, our expert Nutritionist Lauren, tried Veg Me Up to see how it performs when it comes to taste, nutrition and price.

How does Veg Me Up work?

Veg Me Up is a meal kit delivery service providing 100% vegan meals to Sydney and Melbourne. They offer a convenient way to enjoy plant-based meals without the hassle of grocery shopping and meal planning. To get started with Veg Me Up, you can choose from 2 meal plans – 2 person plan or 4 person plan. Next, you can select from 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 recipes per week. Unlike other online meal kit services such as Marley Spoon which make selecting your plan very easy, Veg Me Up’s ordering process was quite clunky when it came to selecting weekly recipes.

Veg Me Up Meal Plans

Despite advertising over 100 recipes, there were only 6 weekly recipes to choose from. This is a similar offering to vegan meal kit provider Just Add Vegan, who also offer 5-6 weekly recipes. Some more options would be great to see, particularly if you have selected the 6-recipe meal plan.

Whilst all meals are 100% vegan, there is no menu filter function and limited customisation. Recipes are labelled with key dietary callouts such as gluten-free, high in protein or soy free. Further information on allergens, cooking time and nutritional breakdown is available in the description of each meal.

Just Add Vegan offers meals that contain no added gluten, gluten free, nut free and no onion or garlic and therefore may be more suited those individuals who have more specific dietary preferences compared to Veg Me Up. Prioritising protein on a plant-based diet is crucial to ensuring optimal health. Hello Fresh and Marley Spoon highlight the protein content of their recipes on their menu, making selecting high protein meals quick and easy. It would be great to see the protein content listed on each Veg Me Up recipe tile, instead of needing to click through to the description of each recipe. 

All meals are designed to be nutritious and healthy, however Veg Me Up always include comfort meals on their menus to cater to those who are looking to satisfy a craving. Once you have chosen your meals, you have the option to add some plant-based essentials to your box, similar to Just Add Vegan.

How much does Veg Me Up cost?

Veg Me Up is a more expensive option when it comes to meal kits, with the cost per serve on their 4 person, 3 recipe plan coming in at $11.62 . This is more expensive compared to vegan meal kit Just Add Vegan which costs $8.99 per serve on their 4 person, 3 recipe plan. Veg Me Up offer $20.00 off your first order as an introductory offer. This is a small discount when compared to the larger services like Hello Fresh who offer up to $200 off when you first sign up.

My Veg Me Up Experience

My box arrived on a Sunday morning, and I received text message notifications informing me when the box was on its way and when it had been successfully delivered. I received the 2-person plan, with 3 recipes:

  • Korean Bibimbap
  • Pasta with Creamy Miso Sauce and Zesty Salsa Verde
  • Roasted Cauliflower, Cucumber Salad, Chickpeas & Tamarind Chutney

The box was well packed. I could immediately tell that sustainability was a priority for Veg Me Up. Each recipe was packaged in a brown paper bag and the cooling bag is made from 100% recycled paper. The recipe cards are also made with 100% recycled paper. If you live in Melbourne and Geelong, Veg Me Up also offers to pick up your empty boxes and ice packs which is a great initiative! 

Each recipe bag had a label with the name of the recipe making it easy to identify. When unpacking the box, I nearly discarded the ice pack without realising all the fridge ingredients were inside – some additional labelling would be useful here to ensure others do not make this same mistake. The vegetables were free from plastic packaging, whilst the herbs came packaged. I love the limited use of plastic, however the freshness of some of the vegetables was questionable. The cauliflower had grey marks on it, indicating that it was not at its best quality. The carrots also had some signs of deterioration on them. 

Despite being made from recycled paper; the recipe cards are excellent quality. To promote sustainability further, I would love to see a digital recipe card option made available. Dinnerly offers digital recipe cards which is a great option. The recipe cards provide comprehensive information on cooking time, difficulty, ingredients, nutrition per 100g, allergens, utensils required and method instructions. Whilst nutrition per 100g is helpful, it is not clear how many total grams each meal is, so it is unclear how much protein, carbohydrates and fat you are consuming with each serve. Nutrition per serve and per 100g is best practice when it comes to understanding the nutritional content of the food you are consuming, so I would like to see their nutritional information panel updated in line with this.

Cooking with Veg Me Up

The core ingredients are packaged in the recipe bag, with any separate fridge items required detailed on the recipe card under the ingredient list. For ingredients such as ginger, which is provided as one large piece, the recipe card clearly details how much you need for the recipe. Pantry items are also clearly marked with an asterisk. Cooking with Veg Me Up was relatively easy, however those that are new to cooking might find these recipes challenging. The cooking method is broken down into 5 steps, however, within each step there are sub steps. As the instructions are laid out in paragraph format, I found myself having to re-read each step multiple times as I either lost my place or was unsure of what was next. I would prefer each step to be clearly displayed on a separate line. Just Add Vegan’s recipe steps are similar, so it is worth noting if you are looking for clear, step-by-step instructions when cooking. 

Portions:

The portion sizes were generous, perfect for two people. 

Favourite Meals:

Unfortunately, I didn’t love the recipes I received. The Korean Bibimbap had the best flavours, however the dish as a whole didn’t make sense. The use of Indian spices in a Korean dish made for a confusing flavour profile. The Pasta with Creamy Miso Sauce was creamy, however the miso sauce was more like a carrot puree and the green sauce was very garlicky due to the use of three very large raw garlic cloves. My least favourite meal was the Roasted Cauliflower, Cucumber Salad. This meal tasted like three separate side dishes that has been combined. The meal was missing a creamy element and so it was very dry. 

Veg Me Up Nutritionist Review

The average protein content per 100g of the 3 recipes I made was 5.1g. As mentioned, Veg Me Up have not included information on nutrition per serve which would be a more accurate measurement. Nutrition per 100g is a good measure to use when comparing two or more foods/products. In this case, Just Add Vegan’s recipes as of the 9th of May 2024 average at 4.36g of protein. This indicates that Veg Me Up may contain more protein per serve compared to Just Add Vegan. 

Veg Me Up includes good-quality sources of proteins including tofu and chickpeas. However, if you are looking for a high protein plant-based meal kit, that is packed with flavour, I would recommend Marley Spoon – most meals contain close to 30g protein per serve.  

The average fat content is low, averaging 3.6g per 100g, with the main source of fat included being olive oil which is a heart healthy fat. In comparison Just Add Vegan contains an average of 4.6g (based on 3 meals from their menu on 9th May 2024). If you are looking for a plant-based meal kit that is low in fat, Veg Me Up is a suitable option. 

The carbohydrate content varies according to the recipe you choose. Overall, the sources of carbohydrates are high-quality including chickpeas and brown rice, the pasta dish was the only dish that included refined carbohydrates. There is a strong emphasis on vegetables across all recipes which is a standout feature. Each recipe provides an average of 2.5 serves of vegetables, which is a good contribution to our daily targets. I would recommend Veg Me Up for those following a plant-based diet who are looking to increase their consumption of vegetables. However, when compared to Marley Spoon’s vegan recipes, these contain 3+ serves of vegetables.

The sodium content averages at 154mg per 100g. This is a lower amount of sodium compared to other meal kits such as Hello Fresh and aligns to guidelines from the Australian Government (aim for foods with less than 400mg sodium per 100g) and is therefore a suitable choice for those looking for a lower sodium meal kit.

Veg Me Up Final Thoughts

Veg Me Up stands out among its competitors for its commitment to quality and sustainability. However, their current menu and customisation is limited, and the flavour profile of their meals doesn’t quite hit the mark.
