The recipes are very easy to follow thanks to the 4-step instructions. All key ingredients and cooking times for each step are written in bold text so you know exactly what to include and how long to cook each ingredient for within each stage. I was able to prepare all the meals easily within the estimated cooking time. My partner, who isn’t a fan of following recipes, made a couple of the recipes himself and found the process to be quick and simple. By far the quickest recipes to make were the tacos, a great option for those looking for a speedy dinner!
Whilst everything was provided for the recipes, I was missing one ingredient from my first box. The plant-based aioli was not included with the Falafel & Spinach-Tomato Salsa Toss recipe, however I was able to sub this with some mayo I had in the fridge.
Portions:
Overall, the portions were good. My partner has a big appetite, so I often worry the meals won’t satisfy him, however he was generally pleased. The only recipes which we both found to be smaller in portion was the Thai Sticky Glazed Beef Tacos and Honey Haloumi & Harissa-Aioli Tacos. The recipe is for 6 tacos (2 servings), however my partner found that 3 was not enough, and consumed all 6. I found that there was not enough haloumi for all 6 tacos, and so I subbed 2 tacos with tofu to increase the protein content of the meal.
Favourite meals:
My partner’s favourites were the Korean-Style Chicken Bites & Garlic Rice and the Sticky Prawn Wontons & Corn Rice. The sauces used in these recipes were sweet, salty and full of flavour. My personal favourite was the Honey Haloumi & Harissa-Aioli Tacos – I love tacos, and I love haloumi, so this was a winning combination for me!
The plant-based burger could be improved. The choice of plant-based patty was underwhelming and did not have a great texture. The Falafel & Spinach-Tomato Salsa Toss was a simple meal that was lacking acidity. Additionally, the combination of rice and falafel made it quite a ‘dry’ meal in terms of texture.
Overall, we found the meals to be quite salty. This was something I found in my previous review and has not improved. The reliance on pre-mixed sauces and spices in HelloFresh’s recipes is a large contributing factor to the saltiness of their meals. These pre-packaged goods contain high amounts of sodium and impact the nutritional quality of meals.
