The main concerns I had when I tried HerbiDoor previously were the low protein content and lack of vegetables in their ‘comfort meals’ and ‘signature series’.

The vegetable content of the ‘signature series’ meals has slightly improved compared to last time, however in some meals they were included in very small amounts. The Thai Green Curry was very ‘beige’ in appearance, and whilst it tasted great, I was searching for the cauliflower, green beans and broccoli that are listed in the ingredients list. The Tandoori Chick’n and Cumin Rice was a similar story, I counted about 5 green peas in the meal which was very disappointing. The Vegan Steak might have been the worst culprit, with 1 floret of broccoli included in the meal! As the meals are not significantly large portions (and there is plenty of space in the containers), I believe it would be reasonable for HerbiDoor to include more vegetables across all their meals. The meals with the best servings of vegetables were the Sweet Chilli Tofu Bowl and Korean Gochujang – you could actually see the vegetables! If you are looking for a high quality vegan readymade meal provider which prioritises vegetables, I would recommend Garden of Vegan over HerbiDoor.

In terms of the protein content, I was generally pleased. Most meals contained over 20g of protein – the Vegan Steak contained the most at 48g, whilst the Korean Gochujang had the least protein at 7g. The use of ‘vegan meats’ in the form of Vital Wheat Gluten provides a lot more protein. Other sources of protein included tofu which is a good quality source.

Compared to other services such as Soulara or My Muscle Chef, there are no preservatives or additives in HerbiDoor’s meals, making them a suitable option for those who are looking for wholefood based readymade meals. I also noticed that the sodium content of their meals is lower compared to last time which is fantastic! Often ‘vegan meat’ replacements contain a lot of sodium to enhance the flavour, however by using good quality herbs, spices, and sauces, they have been able to keep the nutritional quality of the meals. However, whilst the protein content has improved and the overall quality of their ingredients is great, I would still love to see more vegetables included in meals to improve the overall micronutrient content of HerbiDoor’s readymade meals.
