Prawn Singapore-Style Noodles

The average protein content of all the recipes was 26.3g, with the beef tacos, Korean-style chicken bites and beef noodles containing over 30g protein per serving. The meal with the lowest amount of protein was the sticky tofu bites at 14g. The high protein content of meals makes HelloFresh a great option for health-conscious individuals, looking to get adequate protein. The protein sources were varied and included quality sources such as prawns, tofu and chicken.

Recipes included refined carbohydrates predominately, with white rice the most common source. Whilst white rice in moderation is okay, choosing recipes (if available) with sources of un-refined carbohydrates such as brown rice and quinoa provide more fibre and therefore more health benefits. 

The average total fat content of all meals was 31g. Sources of fats in the recipes I selected were mostly from dairy products, mayonnaise, and those found in meat products. These sources of fats are predominantly saturated which when consumed in large quantities can negatively impact our health.  If you are looking for recipes that are lower in fat, I would recommend Marley Spoon over HelloFresh.

HelloFresh is known for their quantity of vegetables per serving, averaging at 3 per serve. Whilst this was reflected in some of the recipes I tried such as the sticky tofu bites, some recipes were not as generous when it came to vegetable quantity. The amount of vegetables sent for some recipes such as the green beans for the sticky prawn wontons was only enough for one serve.

Overall, HelloFresh meals provide a good contribution towards our daily target of 5 serves of vegetables a day, however this is dependent on which recipes you choose.

Once again, the sodium content of HelloFresh recipes is high, containing an average of 1665mg per serve. The prawn Singapore style noodles contained 3203mg per serve, exceeding our daily recommended intake of sodium of 2000mg. For this reason alone, I would not recommend HelloFresh as part of a regular diet. Too much sodium increases our risk for heart disease – if you have a higher risk of heart disease, speak with your healthcare practitioner before deciding whether HelloFresh is right for you.  If you are looking for a meal kit delivery service that is lower in sodium, I would recommend Marley Spoon.
